Prompt Checklist Before You Hit Send (Clients, Ads, Emails)
Most bad AI output isn’t a model problem. It’s a missing constraint.
I keep this checklist next to every important prompt.
Before generating
- Who is this for? (one sentence)
- What should they do after reading?
- Tone in 3 words
- Length limit
- Banned phrases list
- One real detail only I know
After generating
- Read out loud
- Cut 10%
- One personal line added
- Numbers verified
- No claim I can’t defend
Mini “send filter” prompt
Return: (1) fixed draft (2) 3 issues you fixed.
Text: [PASTE]
Sixty seconds of checklist beats ten minutes of rewriting embarrassment.
The Final Verification Layer
Prompt engineering isn't a one-shot game. Even the most seasoned experts rarely get the perfect output on the first try. The difference between a beginner and a pro is the verification layer. Before you blindly copy-paste an AI's output into a client email or a live codebase, you must run it through a mental (or explicit) checklist.
The 3-Point Sanity Check
- The Hallucination Check: Did the AI invent a statistic, a URL, or a library? If you asked for data, always follow up with a secondary prompt: "Are you absolutely certain about these numbers? Provide the exact citation." Often, the AI will immediately apologize and admit it guessed.
- The Format Verification: Did it actually follow your constraints? If you asked for a JSON object, did it add annoying markdown text before the JSON? If it did, you must add a negative constraint to your next iteration: "Output ONLY raw JSON, with no markdown, no introductory text, and no apologies."
- The "Did it answer the actual question?" Check: AI loves to summarize. If you asked it to solve a specific bug, and it spent 3 paragraphs explaining what the bug is without giving the code, it failed the intent check.
By treating the AI's first output as a rough draft rather than a final product, you dramatically elevate the quality of your work. The checklist is your safety net against algorithmic laziness.
